It was the last place he would have expected to find Fox Mulder -- a convenience store, just a few blocks from the stone building where both men worked. Alex stopped by there often, usually to rent movies. It was, in fact, convenient. He could return the rentals off on the way to work in the morning without going more than a couple of blocks out of his way. He had dropped into the habit of stopping here two or three times a week. Along with the store's geographic advantage, Alex liked the movies they carried. A fair sprinkling of Disney movies, which didn't thrill him, a selection of popular titles and, around the corner, a less family-oriented display. Actually, the store had a great selection of porn, a fact that Alex appreciated, considering the current wasteland he called his social life.
Alex had spotted his partner the moment he came around the corner, obviously headed for the same video display that had attracted Alex's attention. Mulder's reaction, when he spotted his new partner, was almost comical. He jerked to a halt and for a minute, Alex thought the other man would turn on his heel and leave. He wouldn't have been surprised. The partnership had gotten off to a predictably rocky start.
"Mulder." Alex nodded casually.
"Hello." Mulder seemed oddly uneasy at Alex's presence. It wasn't like him to let himself be thrown off-balance so completely.
"Not much to choose from."
"From what?" Mulder looked startled.
"The movies," Alex said patiently, wondering what his problem was. He wondered if Mulder had been expecting someone else. Alex glanced around the store. Aside from the clerk, they were the only two people in the building.
"Oh. Yeah." Mulder glanced quickly at the display. "Well, I stop here sometimes anyhow. It's kind of on my way."
"So?" Alex smiled at Mulder more warmly. This might be a perfect chance to thaw some of the ice between the two men. He needed to gain Mulder's trust in order to complete his assignment. "What are you up for? The Hunt for Red October? Demolition Man?" He smiled, again. "Somehow I don't quite see you as a Disney kind of guy."
Mulder laughed suddenly. "No. Not really. I hated Bambi when I was a kid."
Alex shook his head solemnly. "Completely un-American. I may have to report you." The byplay warmed the atmosphere considerably and the two men looked over the display in silence for a few seconds. Alex eyed his partner with appreciation. Mulder had obviously made another stop after leaving the office. In place of his normal suit and tie, he was wearing a pair of faded, but comfortably tight jeans and a worn t-shirt. The casual attire looked good on him. In fact, Alex looked the other man over carefully, it looked very good.
Mulder, seeming to feel the scrutiny, glanced over at his partner. He looked at Alex's empty hands curiously. "How about you? Not finding what you're in the mood for?"
"I know what I want," Alex told him. "I just have to see if it's available." He hesitated, then went on casually. "Actually, I was looking at the other display." He moved a few steps around the corner to the adult section of the video display.
Mulder shoved his hands in his pockets and shrugged. "Yeah, that's where I was going, too," he admitted.
Alex stepped over to let Mulder stand next to him in the quiet corner. He could smell the lingering traces of Mulder's aftershave, a hint of sweat worked up even during a day spent slaving over a desk. He stepped farther into the corner and Mulder followed him until both men were standing before the small selection of gay porn videos the store offered. Alex didn't bother to look at the videos, he just watched Mulder's face carefully. Mulder glanced over the titles with the air of a man seeing something long-familiar. Alex reached out to pick up one of the movies on display, using the movement as an excuse to move closer to the other man. From here, he could see the faint stubble of Mulder's evening beard, even smell a hint of the coffee on his breath.
"I haven't seen this one," he said casually. He flipped the box over and both men studied the description on the back. As though the plot mattered. After a moment, Mulder seemed to realize what he was doing. Alex could sense him stiffen, struggle not to step away from the younger man.
"I ..." Uncharacteristically, Mulder was at a loss for words.
"Have you?" Alex asked softly. "Seen this one?" He held the box up and Mulder's eyes flickered over the graphic picture on the cover.
"Yeah ..." Mulder admitted quietly.
The two men's gazes locked. Gotcha, Alex thought smugly. "Should I invest a couple of bucks in it?" he asked, staring into the hazel eyes across from his own.
Umm ... yeah. It was ... it was pretty good."
"I guess I've found what I want," Alex said softly. He let Mulder watch him put the brightly decorated box back on the display. "How about you? Found what you were looking for?"
Mulder looked surprised. Almost stunned. "I don't ... I wasn't ..." he started, then fell silent as Alex moved closer to him. For a moment, he looked almost panicked, then his gaze locked with Alex's again and he grew very still. The look in his eyes assured Alex that he was on the right track.
"Are you ready to leave?" It was abrupt, but Alex didn't want to give him time to think and maybe change his mind.
"Yes, I guess so," Mulder mumbled. He didn't object when Alex took his arm and steered him toward the door, but Alex could feel his partner's self-possession returning to him at every step. He cursed the store's location, wishing it were closer to his own rented apartment. If he could get Mulder alone, Alex was sure things would keep going his way.
They stepped out into the warm night air and Alex blessed the burned-out streetlight at the corner. Crowding Mulder toward the edge of the sidewalk, he managed to lean in and steal quick kiss as they halted by the edge of the building. Mulder bit his lip and looked around. Alex followed his gaze, looking toward the small, dark alley beside the store. They glanced at each other
